4‑Day+1 Scandinavia Dual City-Dual Country Workshop - A Fine Art Odyssey

September 10-14, 2026 · Copenhagen, Denmark | Malmö, Sweden

During this 4‑day + 1-bonus-day premium workshop across 2 Scandinavian countries, we will be photographing the architectural jewels of Copenhagen (Denmark) and Malmö (Sweden). From the designs by Calatrava to OMA, and of course, Danish architect Bjarke Ingels. From Copenhagen’s status as the UNESCO World Capital of Architecture (2023) to the iconic modern structures of Malmö, connected by the Oresund Bridge, this workshop is designed to capture the unique contrast between heritage and modern vision.

Back to Substance

This Premium 5-day workshop, led by one of the pioneers of black-and-white Fine Art Architecture, is for the serious photographer/artist who wants to learn more than just the obvious about architectural and fine art photography. We created a curriculum that is original and unlike any other workshop: cutting-edge, high-quality content, and always evolving with a novelty for every new workshop: no superficial approach, but a passionate, deep dive.

Workshop Program

During five intensive days in Denmark and Sweden —preceded by receiving a 400‑page syllabus, a 2‑hour pre‑workshop Zoom session, and two post‑workshop Zoom reviews—you will, with my personal guidance:

  • Learn the foundations of contemporary fine art architectural B&W from the source that pioneered this style.
  • Learn sophisticated, architecture‑specific composition systems that go far beyond the rule‑of‑thirds and “leading lines.”
  • Learn that there's a direct correlation between harmonious intervals in music and the distribution of tonal zones in black and white. with a newly developed, comprehensive theory by Joel
  • Understand the other principles behind my B&W processing, not just the steps.
  • Master tilt‑shift lens use for technically accurate images and shooting powerful “hero” perspectives, following a structured and proven approach.
  • Explore what fine art really means, how it relates to human consciousness and Jungian individuation, and how to turn buildings into meaningful, personal work.

This workshop is not about copying a style; it’s about understanding the origin of a visual language and then transforming it into your own.

Why Choose Us

The lead instructor, Joel Tjintjelaar, is one of the pioneers of black-and-white fine-art architectural photography and has continued to evolve this style of photography over the past 17 years. We constantly introduce new techniques and supporting theories to move away from a subjective 'gut-feeling' to a more objective approach toward art and beauty. The syllabus reading that is part of the workshop, now 400+ pages, is continuously updated and expanded to reflect the idea that educators also need to improve and never stop being curious. No workshop is therefore the same. We have a high rate of returning participants (40%) who form the core of a small group of between six and ten participants. Together with my experienced co-instructor, we can therefore ensure that there's always close interaction with and plenty of attention for every participant. We also find it important to have an enjoyable time together and to promote respect and consideration as principal rules.

    PRACTICAL INFORMATION

    Levels

Workshop level: Advanced. We go deep and most likely beyond our comfort zone, and expect serious commitment to fulfill assignments.

Workshop Entry level: Intermediate to Advanced is recommended, but Beginners are welcome as long as you don't expect explanations on basic camera settings and handling.

    Group size: 6-10

Fitness level: Moderate. We will be out for large parts of the day walking and shooting. But it's not an endurance event, and we will ensure there are plenty of (coffee) breaks.

    Our ethical principles

We find it important to actively foster an attitude and environment where everyone is respectful towards one another, regardless of one’s skin color, (preferred) gender, sexual orientation, religion, nationality, disability, or ethnicity, and I therefore will not tolerate intolerance by anyone towards another with any of the listed human features.
