Integrated and Smarter Masking
The second masking webinar for 2024 is focused on smarter masking and practical integration with the rest of the post-processing workflow. Similar to the previous webinar on Integrated B&W post-processing, which focused on B&W processing and how masking decisions play an important role in post-processing. This webinar is the opposite and will focus on masking and how B&W post-processing decisions play a role in it.
- A hands-on online 3.5-hour via Zoom on Masking using Photoshop only
- On effectively masking a variety of images, from landscape to architecture.
- Partially processing images in B&W using the created masks
- Integrated and holistic masking process: when or when not to mask, and how to mask always depends on what we want to do regarding B&W processing.
- The importance of intersecting masks to localize adjustments
- A focus on practical and efficient masking using a smart mix of self-developed methods and Adobe's AI-supported selection features.
What is holistic masking: Holistic masking considers all phases and elements of the artistic process. It considers the envisioned artistic result first, and the adjustments needed to get there, before deciding what hard masks to create where and how, and what can be replaced by simple adjust-and-restore steps or luminosity masks. The type of envisioned photo adjustment decides the type of mask to create.
When: Sunday, November 10, 2024 via Zoom invitation
Time: 3.30 pm CET (Amsterdam) / 9.30 am EDT (New York) / 6.30 am PDT (Los Angeles)
Duration: approx. 3.5 hours
Seats: The number of attendees will be limited. Seats usually sell out fast. Your seat is confirmed and you will receive an invite with a Zoom link within 24 hours upon successful payment.
Recommended level: users with intermediate to advanced Photoshop knowledge but beginners are welcome too.
Workshop Goals:
- Creating hard masks accurately and efficiently using the right method from a set of different methods and combining the different methods using Photoshop only
- Learn how to use Adobe's AI-supported selection features as the basis of a mask to save time.
- Advanced manual methods are taught and used to fine-tune and customize the base masks.
- Understand the importance of intersecting luminosity masks with hard masks to localize adjustments accurately
- Learn what masks to create when there are no defined edges, especially in nature, and still ensure invisible edges and natural transitions.
- The emphasis will also be on learning what you don’t need to mask to save time and to use a simpler and time-saving solution.
The difference between hard masks and luminosity masks: Localized adjustments. Hard masks, as opposed to luminosity or soft masks, give you control over objects, areas, and planes: they enable localized adjustments. Without hard masks, you will severely lack the ability to localize adjustments. Luminosity masks also known as soft masks, will only give you control over light and shadows but they have a global effect and are not local.
Target group: everyone who wants to learn to create better hard masks by only using Adobe PS CC. This webinar is therefore not about how to use any of the plugins I develop such as Quick Mask Pro, and Artisan Pro (or Artisan Max), but I will use some basic features of the panels to speed up the demonstrations
Timeline and deliverables
Pre-workshop - 1 week before the workshop starts you will receive a short preparation video with basic information on the few panel features I use and how to replace them with the basic Photoshop features, namely:
- creating sky masks only using PS
- darkening/lightening areas in a mask non-destructively, only using PS
During the workshop on November 10 - the following will be demonstrated:
- How to use the AI-supported selection features in Adobe Photoshop for the base masks and to further customize and refine the base masks using advanced manual techniques
- Learn the advanced method of Sectional Multi-Channel masking, as an advanced technique for customizing and fine-tuning detailed masks
- Learn to analyze images and determine the final result first before masking
- Learn the important difference between hard and soft masks: localization
- Learn to use intersected masks for a high degree of local control
- Learn the Mask-in-Mask fine-tuning technique.
- Learn to recognize when you need to combine different methods and how, instead of only using one method.
- Learn how to effectively avoid and remove halos
- Some images cannot be masked: learn which images can be masked and which aren’t good for masking. Sometimes re-shooting an image the right way takes less time than to mask it
- During the demos, the created masks will be used while applying adjustments in practical situations
Post-workshop - you will receive the full recording after max. 3 days (allow time for editing the video)
