Feeling and precision — in equal measure
Great B&W images are not made by feel alone, nor by technical correctness alone. They are built on the same principles that govern music: precise intervals — in tone, in space, in contrast — felt as beauty, but grounded in structure. This crash course teaches both.
Live and interactive PAID webinar via Zoom
The follow-up from the webinar 'The artistic thought & decision process' with start-to-end practical demos supported by newly developed tools.

Technical, artistic, analytical, and hands-on
In this high-intensity webinar, I bring together all aspects of B&W fine art image creation: from the technical aspects of achieving tonally precise, structurally coherent images to the artistic design principles that give a photograph its visual weight, supported by newly developed analytical tools, to advanced masking techniques for full processing control.

This is not a course built around theoretical explanation. Instead, through intensive, practical demonstrations, you will absorb artistic principles implicitly, the same way a musician internalizes rhythm by repeatedly doing it.
For beginners and experienced artists alike
If you are new to crafting B&W fine art photographs, this accelerated course will give you a complete and lasting foundation. If you are already an experienced artist, you will encounter fresh analytical perspectives and the latest techniques to push your work further.
Topics
A central thread running through every demonstration is learning to see your image with both eyes open — the feeling eye and the measuring eye. Using innovative analytical tools, including the luminance wheel, Weber contrast principles, and newly developed image analysis methods, you will learn to quickly and objectively identify the strong and weak points of any image — and, crucially, to act on what you find. These are not substitutes for artistic intuition. They are the tools that sharpen it.
- Image analysis - before and ongoing
- Before - before image design and masking
- Ongoing - to evaluate the technical and artistic aspects continuously using the luminance wheel and newly developed image analysis tools.
-
Image design: demonstrated on a low-key design and a classic, balanced ‘rich tonal’ design image
- Distribution of tonal areas with Harmonic intervals (derived from music theory) for classic B&W image designs using the luminance wheel and newly developed analysis tools

- Adjusted harmonic intervals for low-key image designs
- Alternative 60-30-10 rule for B&W
- Selective heightened contrast vs lowered contrast allocation using Weber contrast principles
- Correct and impactful 3D depth rendering - the simple and the advanced way
- Masking images: creating a limited amount of necessary hard masks in the fastest possible way. Due to limited time, masking will only be done to understand what method to use, not to create perfect masks.
- Learning to use and select the right luminosity masks and zone masks, and when to use zone masks. Zone masks have an underrated specific purpose
- Converting and adjusting the images based on the image design while continuously analysing and evaluating the current result against the intended design
- The importance of 'neutralizing' the image first for increased control over contrast, light, and dark tones.
- Controlling skies effectively
- Split toning/color grading
-
All the above will be repeated on a few more images

The attendance is limited - full is full. After successful payment in full, you will receive an invite with a Zoom link within 24 hours. Please also check your spam folders.
Not a plugin demonstration
This webinar is NOT about using the Artisan Pro plugin, but it is an important part of the webinar to speed up the workflow and demonstrations.
All demonstrations can be replayed using Photoshop only. To this end, you will receive a short video with an overview of how to map the panel steps to PS steps before the start of the webinar.
