The Complete B&W Fine Art Workflow - Outline

What separates a technically correct black and white photograph from one that genuinely moves people? After eighteen years of developing, teaching and refining my B&W fine art workflow, I believe the answer lies in understanding the same universal principles that have governed great music, great architecture and great painting for centuries.

In this webinar I will present my fully updated fine art workflow — now expanded with two powerful new foundations: harmonic intervals from music and the 60-30-10 design principle, integrated into a hybrid tonal model that brings objective, universal reasoning to every decision in the workflow.

From the moment you choose a subject to the final adjustment in post-processing, these principles give you a language for tonal design that goes far beyond gut feeling — without replacing the artistry that makes your work your own.

This is not a workshop about two new tools. It is about a complete workflow — analysis, design, masking and processing — that has been eighteen years in development and is now, with these additions, genuinely complete, and covering everything.

Learning Topics

  • Image analysis — before you begin and throughout the process. How to read an image's tonal potential before you touch it, and how to evaluate your work continuously against objective reference charts and new analysis tools as you process.
  • Image design — how to assign a tonic zone to an image before you begin processing, determining its emotional register (low-key, balanced or high-key), and how to distribute tonal areas correctly using the hybrid harmonic model. Includes contrast principles and 3D depth rendering — the simple and the advanced approach.
  • Masking — how masking decisions flow naturally from the tonal design.  Creating hard masks. Selecting and intersecting luminosity masks, zone masks and hard masks for precise tonal control — demonstrated on real images with the key decision points made explicit.
  • Conversion and processing — converting and adjusting images in alignment with the intended design, with continuous evaluation against the ideal tonal model.
  • Sky control — effective techniques for one of the most challenging elements in B&W landscape and architectural work.
  • The music connection — as a demonstration of just how universal these principles are, I will show how to use the mood, tonic and tonal structure of a favourite piece of music as the direct foundation for processing a photograph with the same emotional character and impact. This is not a metaphor — it is a working method.

All topics will be demonstrated across multiple images with different tonal characters and moods.
