Integrated and Smarter Masking 2 - User images
Masking reveals your photography knowledge
Listen to the AI-generated podcast on this webinar here
In 2024 I conducted various webinars and workshops. No matter the main topic, masking was always the most asked topic. Masking is the least artistic part of photography, after all, no one sees your masks in the final result. At the same time: in the masking process your knowledge of photography and your ability to solve new problems becomes very apparent. It reveals genuine insight and creative thinking power.
Sharpening your creative-solving powers
To deepen insights and sharpen the creative and technical solving faculties, I'm announcing a new Integrated and Smarter Masking webinar to demonstrate how to solve the problems users encounter with their images. No image is the same, and no masking problem is either. But they're all variations on a few recurring themes. Sharpening the solving faculties means seeing the bigger theme in the variations. I will reveal the recurring themes and the variations they can occur in.
A user's images follow up on last year's Smarter Masking webinar
It will be a masking webinar similar to the Smarter Masking webinar held in 2024, in which it was emphasized how B&W post-processing decisions should always play a role in the masking process. Masking isn't a stand-alone activity, it is always dependent on the processing adjustment. The topics are the same, but this time the focus is on solving masking issues in users' images. It is therefore encouraged to submit your photo with a description of the masking issue.
Outline
- A hands-on online 3.5-hour via Zoom on Masking using Photoshop only
- Effectively masking a variety of images, from landscape to architecture.
- Partially processing images in B&W using the created masks
- Integrated and holistic masking process: when or when not to mask, and how to mask always depends on what we want to do regarding B&W processing.
- The importance of intersecting masks to localize adjustments
- A focus on practical and efficient masking using a smart mix of self-developed methods and Adobe's AI-supported selection features.
Holistic masking considers all phases and elements of the artistic process where masking is not a goal but only a means. The masks to be created depend on the envisioned artistic result and the adjustments needed to achieve that. Masking is never the goal. If it can be replaced by simpler adjust-and-restore steps then that will prevail.
When: Sunday, February 16, 2025, via Zoom invitation
Time: 4.30 pm CET (Amsterdam) / 10.30 am ET (New York) / 7.30 am PT (Los Angeles)
Duration: approx. 3.5 hours
Seats: The number of attendees will be limited. Seats usually sell out fast. Your seat is confirmed and you will receive an invite with a Zoom link within 24 hours upon successful payment.
Recommended level: users with intermediate to advanced Photoshop knowledge but beginners are welcome too.
Target group: everyone who wants to learn to create better hard masks by only using Adobe PS CC. This webinar is therefore not about how to use any of the plugins I develop such as Quick Mask Pro, and Artisan Pro (or Artisan Max), but I will use some basic features of the panels to speed up the demonstrations
Timeline and deliverables
Pre-workshop - upon successfully signing up, you will receive a short preparation video with basic information on the few panel features I use and how to replace them with the basic Photoshop features, namely:
- creating sky masks only using PS
- darkening/lightening areas in a mask non-destructively, only using PS
During the workshop on February 16 - the following topics will be demonstrated:
-
- Learn to analyze images and determine the final result first before masking
- Creating hard masks accurately and efficiently using the right method from a set of different methods and combining different methods using Photoshop only
- Learn the advanced method of Sectional Multi-Channel masking, as an advanced technique for customizing and fine-tuning detailed masks
- Learn the Iterative Mask-in-Mask fine-tuning technique.
- How to use the AI-supported selection features in Adobe Photoshop for the base masks and to further customize and refine the base masks using advanced manual techniques
- Learn the importance of using intersected masks to localize adjustments with a high degree of accuracy
-
Learn how and what to mask when there are no visible edges (e.g. nature, portraits, etc.) and still ensure local control with natural transitions.
- Learn how to avoid and remove halos
- Some images cannot be masked: learn which images can be masked and which aren’t good for masking. Sometimes re-shooting an image the right way takes less time than masking it
- During the demos, the created masks will be used while applying adjustments in practical situations
Post-workshop - you will receive the full recording after max. 3 days (allow time for editing the video)
